Behind the Scenes of Starting an IP Consultancy

Clio Davies, Managing Director of Sparks IP, welcomed the opportunity to sit down with Rory O'Neill, Reporter at Managing IP, to discuss what it's like to start your own IP Consultancy. Sparks IP were one of five contributors for the article, which also included Pearce IP, Coates IP, Paterson IP and IP Advanced LLC, providing a holistic view from around the globe.
Whilst Sparks IP is only in its infancy in comparison to the other organisations, it was great to see the commonality between us all in terms of challenges, hopes and motivations:
"After spending seven years at Anaqua, Davies found herself wondering what came next. “There
didn’t seem to be any natural progression in my areas of interest, so I looked at the market and
saw a gap for what I wanted to do”
What perhaps was unique to Clio however, was her gender, with the exception of Naomi Pearce from Pearce IP, and her non-traditional background:
Davies says...“Everyone has that imposter syndrome, but I think women are even more likely to
than men. That can hold a lot of people back. But I’ve been doing this for almost 15 years, I’ve
got the networks and the contacts. I’m hoping my reputation will speak for itself,” she adds.
Whilst there are many consultancies and boutiques within the intellectual property industry, the IP community is a very close-knit network and benefits from being able to work together on projects, initiatives and partnership opportunities. Sparks IP is looking forward to working with our extensive network as we continue to grow.
